Simon is the Chief Operating Officer of Synoptica, an AI company helping businesses to improve their sales by gaining insights on their customers.

Simon originally started out as a chemist but for the last 20 years has held a variety of commercial and strategy development roles in the private and public sectors, including running his own business.

Simon is married with two teenagers and lives in Gateshead.

Jim Cockburn joined Emmanuel College Local Governing Body in October 2017. He was Principal of Longbenton Community College for 21 years before his retirement in December 2014. During this time he had a lot of professional contact with Emmanuel College. He has recently written a book outlining his experience as a head entitled “All by Grace: 21 Years of Christian Headship”.

Since his retirement he has undertaken consultancy work in different schools.

He lives in Morpeth and is married with three sons, one granddaughter and another grandchild on the way. He is a member of Jesmond Parish Church in Newcastle.

Ross Smith is Director of Policy at the North East England Chamber of Commerce. He is responsible for the Chamber’s relationship with its 3,000 members in business around North East England, along with overseeing the Chamber’s policy and campaign work, local representation, and other member services.

Ross graduated in politics and history from Newcastle University. Prior to joining the Chamber he worked as a political journalist in Northern Ireland and North East England. From 2004 to 2007 he was Regional Affairs Correspondent at The Journal, responsible for coverage of political and regional development issues. Ross is also a former member of the North East regional council of the Arts Council and leader at Westgate Baptist Church in Newcastle. He lives in Fenham with his wife and four young children.

Duncan has a long history of working with young people, initially as a youth worker, later as History teacher and currently through his continuing involvement as Chair of YFC.

He is a local church minister based at City Church Newcastle and studies part time at Cranmer Hall Durham.

Judith Sword joined the Governing Body of Emmanuel College in December 2014. She has been the Head Teacher of St Paul’s Church of England Primary School for the last ten years and has taught there since 1976. The school is in a socially deprived area of Newcastle upon Tyne and has a high proportion of pupils from other ethnic backgrounds. Each year some pupils from St Paul’s take up places Emmanuel College in Year 7.

Judith is also a board member of the West End Learning Trust which is a group of primary schools in the west end of Newcastle working together to improve outcomes for children.

She is married with two sons and two grandchildren and has a long association with the college as her sons attended Emmanuel College as pupils.

Sarah is a senior family law Solicitor, working in one of the largest legal aid practices in the North-East. She specialises in cases relating to child protection and domestic abuse. She qualified as a Solicitor 11 years ago, having studied at Newcastle University at undergraduate level and Northumbria University for her postgraduate qualification.

Sarah was a student at the College from 1993-2000 and Head Girl during her time in the Sixth Form. She now lives with her family in the North-East and is an active member of her local church. Sarah chairs the sub-group of governors who oversee student's personal development and welfare.

Kerina Clark joined Emmanuel College Local Governing Body in October 2017. Her current full time role is Centre Director at Xcel Centre on Aycliffe Business Park. The centre hosts conferencing and events alongside a coffeehouse and children’s nursery and is the home of Xcel Church. Kerina is actively involved in the local business community and is Chair of Aycliffe Business Park Community, an organisation set up to facilitate growth and support for the 500 companies based in the area.

Kerina is passionate about building community and taking biblical principles and applying them in all spheres of life. She lives in County Durham with her husband and together they are part of the leadership team of Xcel Church, where their three daughters are also actively involved.

Born and bred in Middlesbrough, Nick first became a governor at The King’s Academy in May 2011, at a time when his two children were students at the schools. Each child has since graduated onto university.

Nick is a lawyer by profession specialising in commercial disputes and corporate recovery. He is also an Accredited Mediator. Nick has therefore developed an active participation in the management of discipline at The King’s Academy and he is also Chair of the Academy Improvement Board.

Married, his interests include running, being an avid supporter of park run, and he is also an award winning photographer with a penchant for landscape photography on his travels both home and abroad.

Nick has worked within the voluntary and commercial sector, and is still involved in advising the charitable and educational sectors in a professional capacity.

David retired in 2016 after working at Middlesbrough College for 27 years, latterly as coordinator of Health and Safety courses. He has a degree in Law and is also a Member of the Institution of Occupational Health and Safety (MIOSH). He has a lifelong involvement in teaching, especially with students taking vocationally orientated courses.He was the union safety representative for 27 years and Chair of the UCU union branch at the college for 10 years.

David was elected councillor for Coulby Newham in May 2016. He is active in the local Community Council and helps with the Friends of Fairy Dell.

David is married with two children and lives locally in Marton. He is a keen cyclist and walker.

David has lived on Teesside since 1992 when he was appointed as a consultant at James Cook University Hospital. He has four children, and three grandchildren. One of his children is profoundly deaf and attended Beverley School for the Deaf for her education, and David sat on the board of governors at that school until 2006.David was asked to join the developmental parent group for The King’s Academy, then joined the board of directors in 2003 when the school opened, and then the board of governors from 2008.

David has a passion to ensure children with special needs get the best opportunities to develop and reach their full potential both in education and character.

I have had connections with King’s for the past five years and have been a regular visitor to school assemblies which I really enjoy, (hopefully the students feel the same way!)

King’s is an important part of our local community and I am delighted to be part of the governance team which work alongside both staff and students in ensuring we accomplish high and consistent standards allowing all our students to achieve their true potential.

I have been pastor of Hemlington Baptist Church for the past eight years and prior to this, I was a senior manager with an international food distribution company servicing the catering industry.

Over recent years I have also supported other local schools and I now serve as Chair of Governors at Viewley Hill Academy in Hemlington.

King’s is a great school with a proud record of achievements. I’m delighted to be part of this pro-active governance team and look forward to supporting both the Principal and all the King’s staff in ensuring we go from strength to strength.

Chris took early retirement in 2015 after a long and fulfilling career as a French and German teacher. He has held a variety of posts of responsibility in a range of schools, including as a Deputy Head teacher in Kenya.

Chris was latterly Assistant Vice Principal for Teaching and Learning at Bede Academy, Blyth. He has an ongoing desire to see teachers and students enjoying their work together as they engage in exciting, challenging and inspirational learning.

Married with two sons and three young grandchildren, Chris loves spending time with his family and travels widely whenever the opportunity arises!

He joined the Board of Governors at the King’s Academy in 2017.

Colin has lived on Teesside all of his life and has been a Civil Servant for over 30 years with the last 8 of these working with Open Academies.

He is married with three children all of which have been or are currently being educated at The Kings Academy.

As well as being a member of the local Governing Body at The King's Academy, he is also a Member and Director of Sunnyside Academy, where is currently acts as Vice Chair of Governors and Chair of the Finance Committee.

Colin is also a member of the Discovery Alliance Umbrella Trust Board.

Other than spending time with his family, Colin’s other passion is Coulby Newham Junior Football Club, where he is the President and Treasurer.

Duncan began his career as a history teacher in Hertfordshire where he went on to be Head of History and later Head of Humanities. In 2005 he took a year out of teaching studying Theology at Moore College in Sydney Australia. Upon his return Duncan moved to the North East to work for the Emmanuel Schools Foundation spending much of two years at the King's Academy. Since then Duncan pursued full time church ministry and after further theological study in London he became the minister of Trinity Church Sunderland in 2013.

Duncan is married to Laura and they have four boys, Elliot, Theo, Dominic and Simeon. When not running around after the boys Duncan is never happier than chasing a rubber ball around a squash court.

Martin recently retired from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service after a career spanning 30 years. Martin reached the rank of Group Manager (Divisional Officer) and was Head of the Technical Fire Safety department. Martin has over 15 years’ experience in Fire Safety and Emergency Planning.

He now runs his own Fire Safety Consultancy and Training Company. Martin is educated to degree standard and possesses a BA (Hons) in Law awarded by the University of Kent. He also has a University certificate in Forensic Science from the University of Central Lancashire. Martin has been a school governor for over 25 years.

Most recently he took over as chair of a school in special measures and working with the Executive Head Teacher managed to turn the school around; it was categorised as ‘Good’ within 14 months.

He then took the lead in federating the governing body of two schools into a successful hard federation. He has since assisted other schools to become federated. He has been a member of an IEB at Kirk Sandall Junior School and contributed to its improvement prior to it becoming part of an academy trust.

He currently also sits on two other IEBs. Martin also chairs the school improvement board of a secondary academy that was in special measures and has become the vice chair of the full board.

The school is now on a sound trajectory to becoming ‘Good’ or better. He is also a National Leader of Governance assisting 5 other schools at present to varying degrees and he is the vice-chair of the Doncaster Education Improvement Board.

Mark Harvey has worked for leading global engineering companies and educational providers for over 30 years and has extensive experience in managing state of the art, world class engineering and manufacturing facilities, and engineering processes.

Mark has over 20 years in the education sector, and has designed, delivered and assessed vocational competences and T.A.Q.A training to Awarding Body (AB), National Standards, and Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) Regulations. Mark is an external quality assurer for ECITB, Edxcel and OCR engineering qualifications and Lead Internal QA (LIQA).For three years he has led and supported the team to develop and introduce new and updated procedures and paperwork, arranged and facilitated EQA visits, deciphered reports, and implemented findings.

Mark has helped strengthen college campuses in their achievement of delivery targets, and supported VT areas within their QA processes whilst maintaining compliance with college and AB regulations. Mark has also advised various areas on their IQA process, introduced induction booklets, and college QA documentations.

Mark has a strong knowledge and understanding of ECITB, OCF, NCFE, City & Guilds etc., national, AB and college standards and regulations. He is a founder member of a national training team delivering the full suite of T.A.Q.A of qualifications in an aim to drive up standards throughout the UK.

Over the past 12 years Mark has been a primary and academy school governor/director, where he has been responsible for managing attainment, finance, curriculum, project planning, HR etc.

I have been a teacher since 1978, specialising in early years for 12 years. During my teaching career I have undertaken various additional roles including Early Years Moderator and Assessor for the Basic Skills Quality Mark in Doncaster.

I was a Head Teacher for 10 years, growing the school from 200+ pupils to 436 pupils. During this time, I was seconded to lead another local school on their journey school from special measures to good, resulting in the successful Federation of the two schools in November of that year and becoming Executive Head of the newly formed Federation.

Alongside Headship I became a Local Leader of Education in South Yorkshire and a National systems leader, undertaking Pupil premium reviews across a range of schools.

After 10 wonderful years I retired from headship in 2014, and am now currently working as a Standards and effectiveness partner and independent education consultant.

Dr Mary E Chambers is married to Mark and they have two children: Jonathan and Matthew. Mary is Associate Professor of Special Needs in Education and Director of Student Education in the School of Education, University of Leeds.

After a first degree at the University of Bangor, North Wales and a teacher’s certificate at the Institute of Education, University of London, Mary began her teaching career in mainstream schools where she taught RE. After two years teaching in mainstream schools, Mary began teaching in a Special School for children with mild/moderate learning difficulties were she was Head of Music and Head of RE.

In 1993, two weeks after the birth of her younger son, Mary began a part time MA Special Educational Needs at the University of Leeds. Following this, she began her doctoral studies for which she developed The Early Years Movement Skills Checklist (which is an instrument that has been designed to be used flexibly by teachers, parents and other professionals involved with children showing movement difficulties). Since publishing this, it has been translated into a number of different languages including Dutch, Norwegian and Spanish.

Soon after starting her doctorate, Mary began working as a Research Associate for the Professor of Special Needs in Education, being made a Senior Lecturer in 2008 (later to become Associate Professor). Mary teaches at undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral level and her research interests are in children who have special/additional needs and Inclusive Education and children with atypical development such as Dyslexia, Developmental Coordination Disorder, Autism and ADHD. Mary has written two books and a number of articles and she speaks at conferences all over the world.

Mark is Vice Chair of the Emmanuel Schools Foundation and is an educationist with almost 30 years’ experience in secondary education, teacher training, the continuing professional development of teachers and school leadership. He is Professor of Education and Head of the School of Education at the University of Leeds and also Visiting Professor at Dreistar Educatief, The Netherlands’ No 1 ranked teacher-education University.

Mark’s areas of specialism as an educator are: teaching and learning in schools, school leadership and character education. His ESRC-sponsored PhD at Southampton University focussed on how to engage, motivate and boost the attainment of 14-16-year olds while providing high quality moral education. Mark currently leads an international team of educators working on character education in schools and he enjoys working with teachers and school leaders seeking to improve practice. He has served as external examiner for teacher education at the universities of Durham, Newcastle and Hull.

Born in Salisbury and educated at Bishop Wordsworth’s School, after a first degree at the University of Leeds and a teacher’s certificate at Nottingham University, Mark was a teacher and curriculum manager in secondary schools for 10 years before moving into teacher training and school leadership. He has been married to Barbara for 25 years (who he met as an undergraduate before they were teachers at the same school) and they now have three children at Trinity Academy. He enjoys travelling, especially in the US and Germany, walking coastal paths, black and white photography, reading good books (especially C.S. Lewis’ fiction, theology and ethics), supporting his local church and spending time with his family.

Shirley is married to Andrew and is Mum to two children; one of whom attends Trinity Academy. After leaving school, Shirley qualified as a nurse working on a Special Care Baby Unit and Paediatrics. Since then, she has worked in Management in both catering and retail; and as an Administrator at Job Centre Plus. In 2005 she gained a LLB (Hons) Law at Sheffield Hallam University and is currently employed in Business Development for an Industrial Recycling Company based in Sheffield.

Shirley has worked voluntarily for both the Samaritans and Citizen's Advice Bureau and has been involved in voluntary children's work for the past 20 years. She co-runs a weekly Mum's and Toddlers group and a fortnightly Young People's group.

Beverley Kenny graduated in Medicine in Newcastle in 1983 and was a GP principal in Wallsend for over 20 years.

As a GP, a strong interest in patient empowerment through good quality, evidence based information led Beverley to co-found and develop the website Patient.co.uk. Beverley’s main role is now in medical education and she is currently the course director for Newcastle University's Graduate Entry Medicine (Accelerated) programme.

Bob gained a degree in Civil Engineering from Loughborough University and enjoyed a 46 year career initially on construction sites for large scale projects and then as a Consultant Engineer with a multinational company involved in the design and management of major national and international civil engineering projects. Much of this time has been spent in the North East after setting up and directing a Regional Office in Newcastle for 30 years before retiring from full time work in 2014.

He is involved with a large Anglican church in Newcastle and has been a member of the senior management team, trustee and churchwarden since 1985. Bob is married to Isabel, a junior school teacher, and has three adult children, two being teachers heading up departments, and six grandchildren. Bob is particularly interested in volunteering with Christian organisations and enjoys many outdoor pursuit activities including playing hockey.

Richard is Blyth born and bred. He was a pupil at Blyth Ridley High School, which was on the same site as Bede North and even studied in the same Six Form block! He went on from there to gain a BEng, MSc and PhD at university. He then spent many years working away, but now lives and works locally. He is passionate about Blyth and the community and believes strongly that the region has a wealth of untapped potential, which is one of the many reasons he became a school governor.

Richard was a governor of South Beach First School when Northumberland County Council moved from a three tier to two tier education structure and was actively involved in ensuring that the reorganisation had a positive outcome for the school. He joined the board of Bede Academy when it opened in 2009.

Richard is an IT Solutions Architect, with over 20 years’ experience in designing and implementing enterprise scale applications for major blue chip organisations, financial institutions and, more recently, government agencies. He is married with two children, both of whom attend Bede. He enjoys the outdoors, loves sport and is a Blyth Spartans season ticket holder.

Jonathan has been a member of the Bede Academy Local Governing Body since 2015 and has been a teacher at St Thomas More Catholic School in the North East since 1989. Having joined as the Head of Physics, Jonathan has been Head Teacher of the school since 2005. St Thomas More Catholic School became an Academy in 2012 and a Multi-Academy Trust in 2013 with two primary schools joining in the following years. He was a governor of St Joseph's VA Middle School in Hexham for 14 years. Jonathan is married and has two grown up daughters and enjoys making music, walking and running, although the latter two are beginning to resemble each other somewhat as the years go by.

Patricia Cox has lived in the North East for almost forty years, she returned to work from living and working in the Middle East, in the banking sector. Pat returned to the workplace firstly with the Department of Trade and Industry, then with a leading children’s charity. Pat has six years’ experience as a governor at Ponteland Community High School, she is looking forward to joining Bede Academy. Pat believes it is a great privilege to work with governors and school professionals, to achieve the best outcome for students, in a nurturing but challenging environment.

Lucy graduated from Staffordshire University with an honours degree in German and History not really knowing where it would take her. Having decided against teaching after a year as a language assistant in a German grammar school, she finally settled on a career in volunteer management and now has 20 years experience in the field, predominantly in the heritage and cultural sector, currently working for the National Trust.

Lucy is an ordained Elder of the United Reformed Church and is strongly committed to furthering inclusively and radical welcome within the church community. She regularly leads worship both in her home church and in other URC churches in the area.

Lucy is married with two children, both of whom attend Bede. She loves music, is a keen singer and particularly enjoys supporting the high quality concerts and productions at the academy.

Christina has lived most of her life north of the Tyne and went to school in Newcastle. After A levels she went to what is now Northumbria Uni for a year and then started working for one of the Big Four accountancy firms preparing personal tax returns for clients. After time away in two smaller firms she returned to the first firm where she is on a team looking after wealthy individuals.

She is married to Steve and they have 2 adult sons, one has recently left the RAF and is starting work as a Datacomms Engineer and the other lives in the South and works for a company involved in National Security.

Christina was a governor at her sons’ first school but when N Tyneside moved to 2 tier education, and as her sons were older, she ‘retired’. Out of the office she enjoys reading and outdoor activities. They are often away camping, here and abroad, and go equipped with boots and bikes, XC skis in the winter, so can do whatever depending on the weather.

Darina is the Senior Technical & Quality Director for Asda and has been at the company for 15 years working in a number of different roles including Head of Product Development and latterly as Senior Regulatory Director across Food and Non Food.

In her current role Darina is responsible for the Food Safety and quality of Asda’s own brand food offer. Darina is known for leading large teams through business change and is passionate about developing and coaching individuals to reach their potential.

Previously, Darina has worked in the Food Manufacturing sector for a number of blue chip companies, in different roles within Product Development , Technical and latterly commercial roles.

Darina is passionate about food, cooking for friends and family and travelling in particular to Italy.

Don Hutton was born in Northumberland and after nearly 40 years working in Yorkshire has retired with his wife to his home county. Don Hutton was the Regional Director of ISIS (Independent Schools Information Service) North from September 2000 until the closure of the ISIS regions in September 2007.

During the seven years as Regional Director he delivered a business consultancy service to many schools in the North of England and also in Scotland, the Eastern region of the country and internationally.

He enjoys an excellent reputation in delivering in-house training on all areas of school governance and has a heart for the creation and encouragement of inspirational teaching.

He is a Mathematics Graduate and previous to his role with ISIS North taught at Giggleswick School, Settle, North Yorkshire for 24 years, and also at Barnard Castle School, County Durham.

During that time he taught Mathematics, was Head of Business Studies and Economics, Housemaster, qualified Teacher Mentor, Director of Sport and Director of Marketing.

He was an OFSTED inspector and currently is a governor of two educational establishments in the North East (Blyth and Gateshead).

Don is a member of Alnwick Baptist Church – and is actively involved in outreach activity in his local area.

He attended Westgate Baptist Church, Newcastle, as a youth and came to know Christ as his saviour in his twenties.

He is married with three children.

Helen Harold was born in Gateshead and has spent most of her life in the area with a brief spell in the town of Cambridge.

Starting her career as an Industrial Chemist in the agricultural industry, the passion for science grew. Helen moved into the Pharmaceutical Industry and has spent 30 years in various roles working to develop drugs to eradicate some of the modern day diseases like cancer and diabetes.

Helen has trained as a LEAN leader with the NISSAN Motor company becoming a qualified Change Leader and subsequently saving her company over 1 million by implementing improvement projects.

Helen has been involved in children’s education and has been a governor for the last 12 years.

Helen is a trained ISO 9001 lead auditor working with bodies MHRA and FDA. These are the pharmaceutical equivalent of OFSTED.

Helen is married with two children and 2 grandchildren.

Aileen began her career in 2002 as a teacher at Heworth Grange Comprehensive in Gateshead, but her commitment to ensuring that even the most challenging and vulnerable learners have access to the very best education led her to move to Silverdale School in North Tyneside three years later. At the time this school was designated a special school for young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties (now social, emotional and mental health), and having very recently come out of special measures required substantial improvement. Aileen used her mainstream experience to develop teaching and learning at the school and implement an accredited Key Stage 4 curriculum. She was appointed Assistant Head in 2007, later becoming Deputy, and remained at Silverdale for eleven years.

During this time Aileen completed a further post-graduate certificate in special education, and worked with a number of schools in neighbouring local authorities to support school self-evaluation and improvement work in either preparation for, or following the OFSTED inspection process. She also presents to PGCE and SCITT students on the needs of vulnerable learners and why they need and must have access to the very best teachers.

In 2016, Aileen became Headteacher of the Aycliffe Secure Children’s Centre, the largest of fifteen centres in the country, which was recognised as having outstanding leadership and management by OFSTED in 2018.

Aileen is committed to ensuring that every young person at Joseph Swan Academy has the opportunity to experience outstanding teaching and learning experiences, and this is why she volunteered to join the governing body in November 2018, wholeheartedly embracing the decision to join the Emanuel Schools’ Foundation. She also serves the local community as a trustee of Gateshead Foodbank and is a member of Kelvin Grove Church.

Steven is an entrepreneur, financial adviser, business owner and public speaker who is passionate about seeing people reach their potential through education and action!

Steven’s family have a longstanding association with the Emmanuel Schools Foundation and he is keen to bring his passion for business and leadership to the leadership team for the benefit of students and teachers alike.

In 2009 Steven founded his business The Giraffe Group which provides financial services, residential lettings and property advice to clients across the UK from their Wallsend base.

Steven has extensive experience in HR through his work with Peninsula Business Services as an Associate Seminar Presenter where he helps educate business owners, trustees and school governors on the importance of strategic planning and best practice when dealing with all employment related matters.

Steven is married with three children and resides in Northumberland. He is also an active member of his local Vineyard Church and has previously served from 2012 to 2016 on the Management Committee of Action Foundation which is a Christian Charity based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Rich is married to Louise (who is Danish and works in healthcare) and they have two children. Together they live in St George's, Durham Road, a church they planted in 2016 with a vision to see Gateshead and the North East Come Alive. Rich studied for BA Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Leeds before working as a Youth Pastor in Sheffield for several years. Whilst training to be a Church Leader at St Mellitus College, Rich and Louise lived in East London and worked in a church there. During those two years, he also completed an MA Theology and Religious. After London, the family moved to Sheffield before heading to Gateshead in 2016.

Tim is married to Joanne and together they have 5 children. He is a retired physician having worked in the NHS for 12 years before committing his work fulltime to transforming the North East through the third sector. Tim is the lead Pastor of Bethshan Church and leads the charity Bethshan North East that has amongst other projects a number of alternative provisions for secondary education in Newcastle and Sunderland. Tim travels nationally and internationally to speak on social entrepreneurship and it’s interaction with education and faith and when at home can be found in the garden and with his dogs.

Tim is a qualified Mechanical Engineer and Project Manager. Tim has worked in a range of roles in different organisations in Engineering and Manufacturing. Tim’s main experience is in managing complex projects and organisations, particularly through periods of change. Tim’s current role is as Head of Technical at Hitachi Rail Newton Aycliffe, where he has responsibilities for Engineering, Supply Chain, Facilities, Data and Business Improvement. Previous education experience includes being a governor at the Primary Academy in his village for several years, including 2 years as Chair of Governors and Chair of Finance. This period included an OFSTED inspection – moving the school from Requires Improvement to Good with Outstanding aspects. Tim is married to Sarah, with two boys, Sam and Joe. Tim and family attend church in Gateshead.

Lucy is a former pupil of the school. In 1997 Lucy graduated from Bradford University, in Interdisciplinary Human Studies. Lucy then returned to Sunderland where she qualified as a Social Worker. In 2003 Lucy began a career in social work and has undertaken several different roles within children’s safeguarding services since this time.

Lucy is married to Paul and they have three sons, Peter, John and Luke. In her spare time Lucy is a leader with Girlguiding UK and loves trying new adventures and going to guide camp.
